A donation from the town, and an upcoming meeting

Great idea! The Town of Cutler Bay recently donated from the town’s Administrative Services Department eight surplus Pantech Breeze C520 emergency cell phones and eight Pantech PTA-5070C9US cell phone chargers to the “Cell Phones for Soldiers” Program. “Giving back to the community is a public service in and of itself,” said Mayor Peggy R. Bell. “Through the donation of the Town’s surplus equipment to our local schools and non-profits like Cell Phones for Soldiers, the Town continues to further its mission to make Cutler Bay an excellent place to live, work and play.” Cell Phones for Soldiers is a non-profit organization spanning the nation, serving veterans and enlisted soldiers with free communications and grants for those who are in need of emergency assistance. Founded in 2004 by teenagers Robert and Brittany Bergquist, the Program relies primarily on gently used and recycled cell phones, as well as substantial monetary contributions to “provide a lifeline for America’s bravest.” Since the inception of the program more than 300 million “Minutes that Matter” and 5 million prepaid international calling cards have been distributed to U.S. soldiers. More than 15 million cell phones have been recycled, reducing the impact on landfills. For information please visit www.cellphonesforsoldiers.com or the town’s website at www.cutlerbay-fl.gov. You can also call the Administrative Services Department at 305-234-4262.

Memorial plaque installed next month! In Palmetto Bay news we hear that the long awaited bronze plaque honoring the memory of Bridget Allison Pier is coming soon to Coral Reef Park. A Council-adopted resolution named the playground after village resident Bridget Allison Pier. Village staff tells us that the Bridget Allison Pier Playground will feature new equipment “sure to please kids of all ages.” There is currently a memorial bench overlooking the small children play area and the new bronze plaque bearing the new playground name will be installed in mid-May in a new location. Village officials and representatives from Dynamo Playgrounds have already met to finalize all plans.
