Vice Mayor Ernie Sochin addressed a different sort of audience than he does during Town Council Meetings when he appeared at Books & Books in Coral Gables for a presentation and book signing of his new book, When I was Your Age…, which explores things from the not so distant past that are virtually unknown to the modern generation. More than 40 people attended and Ernie talked about old radio and television shows, dating at the drive-in and other things of the past. “Gas was expensive then — 23 cents a gallon,” Ernie told the audience. “Somebody would come out and fill your car, check your tires and clean your windshield.” There was lots of interacting with the audience, who then queued up to get their books signed. Money matters! The Town of Cutler Bay received the prestigious “Distinguished Budget Presentation Award” from the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) for the Town’s Fiscal Year 2014-15 Budget. Mayor Peggy Bell said, “Receiving this award for financial excellence is such an honor. The town manager and staff, along with the town council, continually strive to improve our financial transparency. This award is further proof our efforts to provide clearer understanding of our budget are recognized by the GFOA.”
Local students will perform “Little Women,” the musical version, on October 28 and 29 at 7:00 p.m. in the auditorium of Miami Palmetto Senior High, 7460 SW 118th Street. The Broadway musical by Jason Howland, lyrics by Mindi Dickstein and book by Allan Knee is based on the classic novel by Louisa May Alcott, which follows the saga of the March sisters—Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy as they grow up in Civil War America. Students Elizabeth Cuenca, Meredith Flinn, Kayla Ladis, Brooke Sterling and Diane Hemingway will bring the characters to life on stage and drama teacher Robin Barson, a former actress herself, is looking forward to seeing all their efforts come to fruition.
“I am thrilled to bring this beautiful musical to our community,” said Barson.
“We are so fortunate to have such incredibly talented students working so hard to present high quality, live theatre in our neighborhood. I hope that families will come out and take advantage of this wonderful experience.”

Movie fans, take note! Miami Dade College’s Miami International Film Festival is hosting GEMS 2015 to whet Festivalgoers’ appetites for next year’s 33rd edition. GEMS is October 22 – 25 and premieres highly-touted films from Cannes, Berlin and Sundance Film Festivals; Oscar hopefuls; and many international box office sensations.
