[dropcap]M[/dropcap]ercedes Benz unilaterally changed the definition of “coupe” 10 years ago and with the introduction of the CLS founded the four door coupe segment, combining the design elegance of a coupe with the comfort and functionality of a sedan.
For 2015, Mercedes-Benz designers extensively revised the four-door CLS Coupe, today regarded as a design icon by many.
Designers honed the front of the CLS and upgraded the interior even more to give it many new, handcrafted details, luxury and sportiness.
The CLS exterior continues with a long hood, a narrow window line with frameless side windows and a downward sloping roof. The latest generation comes across even more dynamic with a new, expressive chrome diamond radiator grille, a striking front bumper with large air intakes and slightly darkened tail lights.
Under the hood
The CLS is offered in the CLS400, CLS550 and the high performance CLS63 AMG models.
The CLS400 is powered by a new 3.0-liter V-6 bi-turbo engine that delivers 329 hp and 354 lb-ft of torque. The CLS550 rear-wheel drive has a 4.6-liter biturbo V-8 that generates 402 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque. The CLS63 AMG cranks out 575 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque.
These powerful engines are mated to cutting- edge gearbox technology in the shape of the world’s first nine-speed automatic transmission with a hydrodynamic torque converter in the premium segment. This innovation builds on the strengths of the previous sevenspeed automatic transmission which set the benchmark for efficiency and comfort. With nine forward gears, this new transmission reduces fuel consumption while further enhancing shift comfort and agility.
The CLS also brings many technical innovations to the road, including the futuristic MULTIBEAM LED headlights that open up new dimensions in lighting systems. High performance, precision LED modules automatically provide the best possible illumination, whatever the road and traffic conditions.
The cutting-edge technology on-board also includes intelligently networked driver assistance and safety systems, including COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST PLUS to help prevent rear-end collisions, even through autonomous braking if necessary. State-ofthe- art assistance systems from the E-Class and S-Class can be fitted to the CLS as an option, including DISTRONIC PLUS with Steering Assist, BAS PLUS with Cross- Traffic Assist, PRE-SAFE Brake with pedestrian detection, PRE-SAFE PLUS, Active Blind Spot Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist, Active Parking Assist with PARKTRONIC including lateral parking maneuvers and a 360-degree camera.
A completely new multimedia generation offers intuitive operation in the CLS Coupe, including elaborate animations and visual effects which present all the functions in a clear, highly attractive manner. The Audio 20 CD or optional COMAND Online infotainment systems are available in combination with the new eight-inch color display in the head unit.
The MSRP for the 2015 Mercedes-Benz CLS ranges from $66,915.
