Miami Heat Wheels in action

On Sunday, June 1, the Michael-Ann Russell Jewish Community Center in North Miami Beach will be on double duty, by hosting two important events in their efforts to raise awareness and some much needed funds for two very worthwhile and inspiring organizations.

The MAR-JCC’s Prime Time Girls Basketball Team consisting of girls in grades 5 and 6, recently developed a charity aptly named the Points 4 LoveProject as a way to give back community service hours to charitable causes. For every point that the Miami Heat Basketball team players score in their season, the Prime Time girls will offer community service hours towards Heat players’ charities. During the development of this project, the girls discovered the Miami Heat Wheels – a competitive wheelchair basketball team in the National Wheelchair Basketball Association (NWBA).

“Upon looking for the Miami Heat player contact information on-line, we unexpectedly came across the Miami Heat Wheels website, and were inspired to learn more about them,” explains Susanne Reiter, mother of one of the Primetime Girls Basketball team players and the woman responsible for spearheading the project along with her daughter Ahava.

The Miami Heat Wheels Team will showcase their skills in two tournaments – one against the Sunrise Suns and the other against the Ft. Lauderdale Sharks. The tournaments will take place in the Scheck Family Gymnasium at the Michael-Ann Russell JCC.

While fans cheer in the gymnasium, an additional 300 Special Olympics athletes, coaches and family members from Miami- Dade and Monroe will take part of the Special Olympics Florida – Miami-Dade Aquatics Games, just a few hundred feet away at the MAR-JCC’s Schmidt Aquatics Center. These games will begin at 9:30 a.m. and run until 1p.m.

Athletes of all ages and skill levels will compete in various swimming heats. Both the Miami Heat Wheels Wheelchair Basketball Tournament and the Special Olympics Florida – Miami-Dade Aquatics Games are free and open to the public, with food and beverages available for purchase. Sponsorship and opportunities are available.
