Jennifer Holiday Tops off 2016 AACC Broadway Concert SeriesTony and Grammy award-winning artist Jennifer Holliday gives the culminating performance in this season’s Broadway Concert Series, on Wednesday, April 6 at 8 p.m. at Aventura Arts & Cultural Center.

Holliday’s show-stopping, heart-wrenching performance of the torch ballad “And I’m Telling You, I’m Not Going” in the smash hit Broadway musical Dreamgirls made her an instant star, introducing her full, soulful voice to the world. Her portrayal of Effie “Melody” White, a role which she co-created, not only brought theatergoers to their feet for eight performances a week, but garnered her a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical and her first Grammy Award for Best R&B Female Vocalist. Additional theater credits include Sing Mahalia Sing: The Mahalia Jackson Story; Downhearted Blues: The Bessie Smith Story; Harlem Suite (with Aretha Franklin); Chicago (starring as Mama Morton); Grease (starring as Teen Angel); and Black Nativity (starring as the Angel of God). Holliday also reprised her role as Effie to sold-out crowds in 2007.

In addition, Holliday has performed all over the world in theater and with leading symphonies including the Boston Pops, The National Symphony Orchestra, The San Diego Symphony and The Cincinnati Pops Symphony. She’s performed at The White House for four U.S. Presidents and in 2000 she received an Honorary Doctorate of Music from the Berklee College of Music for her work on behalf of mental health awareness, depression and suicide prevention.

The Broward Center for the Performing Arts manages the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center, a 14,864-square-foot, 330-seat waterfront complex that hosts performing arts, cultural and educational programming for all ages.
