‘Fit for Pink’ raises over $8k to help fight breast cancer

Spinning into action to help fight breast cancer, the recent “Fit for Pink” event at Olympia Gym in Aventura raised over $8,000 thanks to fitness enthusiasts who participated in spinning, Body Forging, yoga and Zumba classes during a fitness extravaganza/- breast cancer awareness day featuring valuable raffle prizes.

“The Fit for Pink event was extremely successful,” said Debbie Miller, president of the Greater Miami Region Hadassah Mitzvah Chapter that coordinated the fundraiser in cooperation with Peter and Delia Cicale, owners of Olympia Gym.

“We had about 300 people attend – but so many donations came from others who couldn’t come. Our four- year-old Hadassah Mitzvah Chapter was very pleased with all the proceeds raised – and especially delighted that the Celebrity Alaskan Cruise, our grand raffle prize, was won by breast cancer survivor Sandra Jada.

Fortunately, Sandra, who resides in the neighboring city of Hollywood, has been cancer-free for the past six months – but treatments have depleted her funds. Jada’s sister helps her make ends meet – and now they’re both looking forward to going on the Celebrity cruise. Other great raffle prizes were also awarded to cancer survivor Martine Mann, who won jewelry from Phillips Frankel and Sharon Simon, who won a Romero Britto beach bear.

On behalf of Hadassah and Olympia, Miller expressed appreciation to all local merchants and sponsors that supported the Fit for Pink event including: Whole Foods Market, Zen Zen Salon, The Changing Room, Danny Mizrachi Salon, Eye Optics, Juice & Java, Broadway Across America, The Forge, Massage Envy, Gallery Art, Contour Day Spa, Big Pink, Prime 112 and Lucky Strike.

Proceeds from Fit for Pink donations will be donated to Hadassah for Breast Cancer Research, Education and Treatment. Hadassah. The Women’s Zionist Organization of America, with over 250,000 members, is the largest volunteer, women’s Zionist organization in the United States.

Summing up the sentiments of everyone who helped make the “Fit for Pink” fundraiser such a great success, Body Forging instructor Kevin Philion posted this message on Facebook: “Wow – what an awesome day! We raised thousands for cancer. I was proud to have taken part in such a worthy cause. Thank you Debbie Miller, Hadassah, Olympia Gym and members – ‘You Rock!’”

This year for the first time, Hadassah will be partnering with Susan G. Komen for the Cure to fight breast cancer in the U.S., Israel and worldwide with a week of outreach activities in Jerusalem Oct. 25-29 and the establishment of the Israel Breast Cancer Collaborative. During the delegation trip, Komen will call together leading researchers and clinicians for a “Think Tank” designed to jump-start new thinking on breast cancer science. Delegates to the larger mission trip will investigate breast cancer issues and solutions in sessions with Israeli officials and non-governmental organizations.
