When Alan H. Singer, Financial Consultant, isn’t at his Wells Fargo Advisors Aventura office helping clients invest wisely, he dedicates much of his time investing in supporting the success of physically and mentally challenged children involved in Special Olympics Florida.

To honor Singer’s 30-year tenure serving as Special Olympics Chair, Wells Fargo Advisors recently presented him with a “Volunteer Service Award” and $10,000 donation to the David L. Singer Memorial Foundation. The Foundation was established in 1989 by Singer as a tribute to his son, who succumed to cancer. Singer’s son loved the Special Olympics and in 1991, the annual Special Olympics “Summer Games” was renamed “The David L. Singer Memorial Special Olympics.”

Singer was proud to be selected out of 500 nominess to receive one of Wells Fargo’s top 16 Volunteer Service Awards and the $10,000 donation, which will help fund Special Olympics athletic programs.

The philosophy Wells Fargo Advisors shares with associates imparts the message: “We value the extraordinary commitment shown by team members who dedicate their time and talent to volunteering with a nonprofit organization or school. Annually, we acknowledge this dedication by awarding those selected to be recognized for outstanding volunteerism.”

Singer initiated a Special Olympics program in 1983 through the North Miami Beach Optimist Club and was sanctioned by the local Special Olympics that year.

“We were one of the first all-volunteer programs that funded, hosted and ran a major program on behalf of Special Olympics and became proficient enough that Special Olympics uses our program nationally as a prototype to encourage volunteerism on a local level to run programs on their behalf,” Singer said. “Our program works hard to break down stereotypes many people have about the cognitively disabled.” Volunteers are being recruited now for the 2013 Special Olympics Summer Games qualifying Track & Field Meet, which will be held March 3 at the Traz Powell Stadium at Miami-Dade College, hosted by the David L. Singer Memorial Foundation and North Miami Beach Optimist Club. Special guests will include professional athletes from the Dolphins, HEAT, Marlins and Panthers.
