The Florida Hospital Association (FHA) has honored Brijesh P. Mehta, MD, Director of Stroke and Neurocritical Care in the Neuroscience Institute of Memorial Healthcare System, with the Celebration of Service Award for 2015 Caregiver of the Year.

The program recognized caregivers, hospital trustees, and hospitals across the state that have achieved notable successes in improving quality and patient safety, made significant impacts on their local communities, engaged hospital staff, transformed care delivery and increased efficiency.

“Every day, Florida caregivers and trustees work to deliver the best quality care at the best value,” said Bruce Rueben, FHA president. “The hospitals and leaders recognized this year have demonstrated innovative ways to impact patient care and their communities. While the awards ceremony highlights excellent personal and organizational efforts achieved within the Florida hospital community, the Caregiver of the Year Award is designed to honor an individual who provides outstanding service and exemplifies a strong commitment to a quality patient care.”

With immense dedication to stroke prevention, Dr. Mehta is an inspiration to peers, staff, patients, and the community served by Memorial Healthcare System. As a Medical Director of Stroke and Neurocritical Care in the Neuroscience Institute, he approaches each day with a passion for quality patient care.

By revolutionizing stroke protocols that deliver time-sensitive treatments and introducing new technologies and procedures, Memorial’s Comprehensive Stroke Centers perform among the highest volume of endovascular stroke procedures in the country. Dr. Mehta’s accessibility on the phone or via Facetime with local EMS en route to the hospital shows his dedication to innovation of stroke care. Under his leadership, Memorial received the American Stroke Association Gold Plus and Target: Stroke Honor Roll Elite Plus status. Dr. Mehta will lead Memorial as the first healthcare system in the country to launch Pulsara at a Comprehensive Stroke Center. Pulsara is a smart phone app facilitating rapid communication of stroke alerts for early activation of the catheter lab.

“I would like to thank the Florida Hospital Association for this award,” said Dr. Mehta. “While I would love to say that this is a personal recognition, it would be an oversight on my part if I did not mention that this is the result of the outstanding teamwork within the Memorial Healthcare System and the Stroke Program. I thank everyone including staff, ER physicians, radiologists, cath lab team members as well as the EMS team members who worked night and day with me to revamp our stroke protocols to develop the best outcomes possible for our patients.”

Prior to Joining Memorial Healthcare System, Dr. Mehta trained for eight years at Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham & Women’s Hospital, both leading teaching institutions for Harvard Medial School. He earned his medical degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a bachelors of Science degree in biology from Emory University.
