Since 2010, tens of thousands of Floridians, including thousands of sexual abuse survivors, have joined in the “Walk In My Shoes” campaign with Lauren Book, founder and CEO of Aventura-based Lauren’s Kids foundation, to show their support for her mission to end child sexual abuse and help survivors heal.
2015 marks the 6th anniversary of the 1,500-mile journey across the state of Florida and over 7,500 miles towards protecting childhood. The campaign has given voice to the 1 in 3 girls and 1 in 5 boys who are sexually abused before their 18th birthday. Armed with the knowledge that 95% of abuse is preventable through awareness and education, the “Walk In My Shoes” walk from Key West to Tallahassee empowers sur- vivors, educates communities, and advocates for legislative change.
“TheWalk is a symbol of commitment to ensuring no child will ever have to endure what I did; that we — the parents, teachers, coaches, mentors — are passionate about protecting the innocence of childhood. That we will not stop until child sexual abuse is a thing of the past,” said Book.
Since its inception in 2007, the Lauren’s Kids Foundation has championed almost two-dozen pieces of legislation strengthening Florida laws against sex offenders, and created the Safer, Smarter Kids curriculum, currently in 16,000 classrooms across the state. Lauren’s first children’s book, “Lauren’s Kingdom,” will be released nationwide on March 7th, and like the curriculum, seeks to teach children personal safety from a place of fun, not fear.
Added Book, “As much as we’ve has done and as far as we’ve come, there is still more left to do in the fight for a safer Florida. Join the movement to protect childhood… come walk with us!”
The “Walk In My Shoes” Aventura “pitstop” will be Sat. March 21st, from 3-3:30 p.m. in front of Lauren’s Kids Foundation headquarter at 18851 NE 29th Avenue.
