Mount Sinai Medical Center recognizes the importance of preventive breast health and is committed to providing the most comprehensive breast care. The digital mammography services at Mount Sinai Aventura, located at 2845 Aventura Boulevard, complement the existing services provided at The Lila and Harold Menowitz Comprehensive Breast Center at Mount Sinai’s Miami Beach campus. The Menowitz Breast Center was the first breast center in Florida to be accredited by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers.
Mount Sinai Aventura’s mammography services are backed by the medical center’s award winning breast center team of experts. State-of-the-art mammography equipment provides digital technology with computer-aided detection to ensure the highest quality images for accurate diagnosis. Comprehensive breast services available at Mount Sinai include digital screening mammography, digital diagnostic mammography, breast ultrasound, breast MRI, computer aided detection, MRI guided biopsy, cyst aspiration and more.
According to the National Cancer Institute, all women age 40 or older should have screening mammograms every one to two years. For every 1,000 women who have a screening mammogram:
• 100 are recalled to get more ultrasound images
• 20 are recommended for a biopsy
• 5 are diagnosed with breast cancer
“We are committed to ensuring that every patient fully understands her test results, which we aim to provide quickly and accurately,” said Dr. Ivy Salom, interpreting radiologist at the Mount Sinai Aventura diagnostic center.
Screening mammography can help reduce the number of deaths from breast cancer among women ages 40 to 74. Risk factors for breast cancer include age, family history, genetic alterations, breast density, long-term use of menopausal hormone replacement therapy, radiation, alcohol use, low physical activity levels and body weight.
“The relationship between extra weight and breast cancer may have to do with the estrogen that fat cells are known to produce, or with impaired metabolism from the elevated insulin and growth factor levels, “said Dr. Elisa Krill Jackson, oncologist who specializes in breast cancer.
Should follow-up care be necessary, patients can take comfort in knowing that The Mount Sinai Comprehensive Cancer Center has received the Outstanding Achievement Award from the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (CoC) – the only Florida hospital to receive this recognition three times in a row. And, at Mount Sinai, cancer patients receive a team of expert doctors who will customize their healthcare, as well as benefit from a wide range of collaborative support services such as nutritional counseling, psychological care, support groups and a resource center.
To help raise money and awareness for women’s cancers, Mount Sinai will partner with Saks Fifth Avenue Bal Harbour to host the 2013 Key To The Cure, a charity shopping weekend taking place October 16 – October 20. Visit www.msmcfoundation.org/KeyToTheCure to purchase this year’s Key To The Cure T-shirt designed by Pucci, or tickets to attend the kickoff event. All proceeds from tickets and T-shirt sales will benefit the Mount Sinai Comprehensive Cancer Center.
