New Program Offers Free Mezuzot To Jewish College Students

Now every dorm-dwelling Jewish college student can hang a mezuzah on their doorpost for free.

MIAMI – Jewish college students who live  in South Florida dorms (or who live in South Florida but are dorming elsewhere) can now fulfill the biblical commandment to post a mezuzah on their doorposts  (a small parchment inscribed with select passages from the Torah, or Bible) for free, thanks to a newly launched program called the “Mezuzah Club” at MezuzahClub.org.

Jews throughout the millennia – even those who are non-religious – have been posting mezuzot (plural of mezuzah) on their doorposts in fulfillment of the Biblical commandment to inscribe the words of the Shema, the seminal section of the Torah that proclaims G-d’s Oneness “on the doorposts of your house” (Deuteronomy 6:9).

Thanks to the generosity of Miami entrepreneur, Michael Cases, who dedicates the project to the memory of his late grandparents, any Jewish college student in South Florida who wants a kosher mezuzah, including the parchment (writin in Israel) and a beautifully handcrafted wooden & lucite case in which it is placed, will be given one for free to hang on the doorpost of his/her dorm room.  All a student has to do is visit MezuzahClub.org, request a mezuzah & pick it up together with a set of instructions.

The project launch coincides with Yom Hashoah, when we remember the six+ million who were killed in the Holocaust. “It’s a Mitzvah that connects young Jews with Jews of yesteryear and sets as a reminder of the rich heritage we were gifted” explains Rabbi Moishe Kievman of Chabad Chayil, the organization overseeing the project.

“The mezuzah is the one symbol that Jews all over the world – whether they’re observant or not – can identify with; a bonding instrumentality that connects Jews on both a physical and spiritual level. Just like in ancient Egypt when Jews placed the blood of the Passover sacrifice on their doorposts in accordance with G-d’s decree so that the angel of destruction would pass over their homes, mezuzot protect Jewish homes with G-d’s sheltering Hands and confer infinite Blessings.”

While the launch of the Mezuzah Club primarily targets South Florida Jewish college students, Rabbi Kievman hopes to expand the effort so that every Jewish college student the world over can avail themselves of this wonderful opportunity to easily fulfill the commandment of mezuzah.

The response has been overwhelming,” said Cases who oversaw every detail of the project, from the purchasing the mazuzah scrolls (klafs) from Israel, the Mezuzah cases from an artist in New York to the buildout of the website. “With G-d’s Blessings and the generosity of additional donors, we can reach so many more young Jews.”
