Nutriway, helping people discover the best way to lose weight with a European protein weightloss system, recently hosted an Aventura Marketing Council Chairman’s Roundtable luncheon featuring Matthew “Whiz” Buckley, a former TOPGUN Navy fighter pilot whose new book From Sea Level to C Level: A Fighter Pilot’s Journey from the Front Lines to the Front Office chronicles how he channeled years of military experience into a successful career as a corporate America executive.
Business and community leaders gathered at Christine Lee’s at Gulfstream Park were welcomed by AMC Chair Cliff Schulman of Weiss, Serota, Helfman and Fabian Graff, CEO of the newest Nutriway center now open in Aventura’s Promenade Shops along with his partners Eran Danino and founder Philippe Troquet. A graduate of TOPGUN Navy Fighter Weapons School, Buckley flew the F/A-18 Hornet and 44 combat sorties over southern Iraq. After leaving active duty, he served as managing director of a $2.5 billion option trading firm headquartered in Chicago and is currently founder and CEO of a financial company based in Boca Raton.
Specializing in leadership development, risk management and strategic planning for Fortune 500 companies, Buckley is an internationally recognized speaker and is now also sharing his experiences in the military and corporate America in his book From Sea Level to C Level: A Fighter Pilot’s Journey from the Front Lines to the Front Office. Targeted to top executives, the book features powerful tools to identify, manage, and defeat business risks; and provides essential insights and strategies to jumpstart programs or improve risk management initiatives.
Sharing his own struggle to overcome career setbacks in the aftermath of 9/11, Buckley said he went from “hero to zero” – but was ultimately able to translate leadership in the military to the business world. “Stay focused on the competitive ‘threat’ – if you lose sight, I guarantee you’ll lose the fight,” he advised, going on to emphasize leadership is an ‘AART’ – an acronym standing for Authority, Accountability, Responsibility and Trust that must be shared amongst owners, management and staff.
Buckley also advocated deploying a corporate “battle plan” based on the strategy: Plan, Brief, Execute, Debrief. “To improve future execution, I ‘debrief’ everything in my business,” he said. “Ask, how did we do vs. how did we want to do? What were the good outcomes and ‘other’ outcomes that can be turned into lessons learned. Also remember as leaders, it starts with you – so don’t lead a debriefing with ‘we.’ It begins with ‘I’ – I made this mistake during an execution and I can get better.”
