Lifesaving mission by Officers Emilio Teodoro, Hammocks District, (left) and Enrique Sanchez, Cutler Bay Policing Unit, is honored by the Citizens Advisory Committee.

Officer Feras M. Ahmed is learning how to walk again after injuries suffered in a motorcycle crash the night of May 27 left him barely alive.

Critical first aid assistance by Miami- Dade Police Hammocks District Officer Emilio Teodoro and Officer Enrique Sanchez of the Cutler Bay Policing Unit is credited with saving the fellow officer’s life.

Ahmed, a five-year reserve police officer off-duty from Sweetwater’s city force, was aboard a motorcycle near his home at Bird Road (SW 42nd Street) and SW 149th Avenue when he swerved to avoid a potential crash with an oncoming vehicle.

Thrown off his bike to the pavement, he was found by Teodoro and Sanchez in severe pain and barely conscious, lying next to his motorcycle with multiple injuries, including two broken wrists, a partially severed finger and a broken bone, protruding through the skin of his left arm.

Immediately administering first aid to help stabilize Ahmed, the two officers placed a towel over his head wounds, affixed an arm board to the broken limb and placed gauze bandages to help stop bleeding from the finger.

“Rescue personnel said quick action saved the victim’s life,” stated Maj. Alexander D. Casas, Hammocks District commander. “When Miami- Dade Fire Rescue arrived, they took over the efforts and further stabilized the victim.”

Taken to Ryder Trauma Center for additional emergency aid, Officer Ahmed was released only recently for therapeutic treatment “to help him restore his ability to walk,” according to a Sweetwater police spokesperson who added, “That may be another miracle; he’s still in tough shape, but we’re all pulling for him.”

For their part, Offices Teodoro and Sanchez were named “Officers of the Month” for July by the Hammocks Citizens Advisory Committee, and cited for “quick response and actions, which resulted in the saving of a life.”

“They are truly an asset to the department and the community they serve,” Maj. Casas concluded.
