Aventura Hospital and Medical Center is proud to announce the launch of its Podiatric Medicine and Surgery Residency Program with the added credential in Rearfoot/Ankle Surgery (PMSR-RRA). This is the first graduate medical training program at the hospital. Residents began their rotations in July. The Podiatric Medicine and Surgery Residency received approval status following a rigorous on-site evaluation conducted by the Council on Podiatric Medical Education.
“The Podiatric Medicine and Surgery Residency is the first step towards our goal of becoming a world-class educational facility,” said Heather J. Rohan, Chief Executive Officer of Aventura Hospital and Medical Center. “I am proud of our team for their diligent efforts, and I look forward to welcoming our new residents to our hospital. ”
Applications have been accepted from resident candidates representing diverse educational institutions from all over the country. Led by Program Director Dr. Marie Williams, the residents fulfill a fully comprehensive three-year program in which they will have the opportunity to follow board certified podiatric faculty as they perform foot, ankle, reconstructive and trauma procedures as well as a nonpodiatric faculty representing a variety of medical and surgical specialties.
“This is a dream come true,” said Dr. Marie Williams, DPM, Program Director of the Podiatric Medicine and Surgery Residency. “We have wanted to provide an educational platform for quite a while, and the timing couldn’t be more perfect with the newly opened 10th Floor Orthopedic and Spine Institute. The new unit provides a stateof- the-art classroom for South Florida’s future podiatric physicians.”
The Orthopedic and Spine Institute is home to leading edge treatments and the latest innovations in surgical approaches including foot and ankle reconstruction, rheumatologic therapy and wound therapy. The result of a $10 million capital investment, the 30,000 square-foot customized, post operative unit is equipped with special features including an on-unit rehabilitation gym and dining area designed to provide socialization among physicians, patients and family members.
