It was a slam- dunk success for networking when Vi at Aventura and Alternative Home Health Care teamed up to host an Aventura Marketing Council/Chamber of Commerce Chairman’s Roundtable luncheon featuring Tamara James, current Mayor of Dania Beach and former WNBA champion athlete.
AMC Chair Gary Pyott of Association 1st joined by Renee Garvin, Executive Director of Vi at Aventura, and Beth Halprin, Director of Clinical Services for Alternative Home Health Care, welcomed all-star business and community leaders to the lovely Garden Room at The Point of Aventura’s lavish Spa & Recreation Center. Special appreciation was expressed to Marsha Hoffman of The Point for perfecting event details; and Aventura Commissioner Gladys Mezrahi of Indigo Events for arranging Tamara James’ appearance.
Taking center court, James shared impressive stats including becoming a McDonald’s All-American at South Broward and leading the team to three state titles. While on full scholarship at UM, she led the Big East Conference in scoring as a freshman, finishing as all-time leading scorer. In 2008, she was a Washington Mystics first draft pick, and then went on to play WNBA basketball in Spain, Turkey and Israel, where she helped win three championship titles. “My experiences in Israel really molded me into who I am today,” James said.
“The integrity, the passion, the people, the traditions I learned while there – I will always be an honorary Israeli. “
In 2016, James became Mayor of Dania Beach, where she was born and raised, achieving her goal to bridge the gap between the public and city officials. Always dedicated to community service, James also started a Foundation to serve Dania’s disadvantaged youth.
“Growing up, my family struggled,” James said. “My mom didn’t pay the light bill so I could have basketball sneakers. My parents instilled hard work, dedication and sacrifice in me.”
Recalling her intense athletic training, James said, “They try to build you up to the strongest person you can be, physically and mentally. Number one teams can lose because they’re playing a physical game, but they’re being beaten by mentally stronger teams. I was taught that hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard. I was pretty short for a basketball player, but I was able to defeat a lot of people because I was mentally tougher.
“I had to practice and be prepared even when I was on the bench, and I started approaching my life that way. The minute you take your foot off the gas, someone is waiting to pounce and take your place. We’re only as great as we practice and play each and every day. I love to inspire and motivate by telling my story. When people say, ‘How did you get to you where you are?’ I say, ‘No one worked as hard as I worked.’”
