‘A Gatsby Affair’ to honor library champion Toby Muir

The Friends of the Miami-Dade Public Library is hosting its second annual fundraiser on Saturday, Mar. 9, 7 p.m., at the Main Library, 101 W. Flagler St. This year’s theme, “Miami Moments 2013: A Gatsby Affair” honors Toby Muir whose family founded the Friends of the Library.

Emcee for the evening is Ruth Shack and entertainment includes the music of Cole Porter, Gershwin and live Swing-era jazz as performed by saxophonist Matthew Taylor; appearances by legendary Miami Drag Queen Adora and friends; Miami-themed exhibits including photographs by Gleason W. Romer, plus a silent auction featuring photographs by Andy Sweet, Mario Algaze, Silvia Lizama, Bill Maguire and Deborah Gray Mitchell, among others. Attendees are encouraged, but not required, to dress in Gatsby style.

The event honors library champion Toby Muir, a partner at Dunwody, White & Landon, and a former long-time president of the Friends. Muir spearheaded the 1988 grassroots campaign that established a library book trust.

Miami Moments is made possible with additional support from Associated Photo, Borders Framing & Gallery, and Southern Wine & Spirits.

Tickets are available at www.miamimoments.org. For more information, contact the Friends of the library at friends@mdpls.org or call 305-375- 4776. All proceeds will benefit the Miami-Dade Public Library System’s literacy programs.

The Friends of the Library was founded in 1974 as the non-profit organization dedicated to promoting library excellence by advocating, volunteering and raising funds for special library programming, literacy initiatives and outreach efforts as approved by the library.
