MCCJ will honor Charles M. Blow, New York Times columnist, with this year’s Hank Meyer National Headliner Award on May 3, during a breakfast at the Rusty Pelican on Virginia Key.
The Hank Meyers Award goes to journalists who mirror MCCJ’s mission of creating an inclusive community. Past honorees of this award include Walter Cronkite, Dan Rather, Barbara Walters, Tom Brokaw, Leonard Pitts Jr., ABC’s John Quiñones and Meet the Press moderator Chuck Todd.
Charles Blow joined The New York Times in 1994 as a graphics editor and quickly became the paper’s graphics director, a position he held for nine years. In that role, he led the publication to a Best of Show award from the Society of News Design for the information graphics coverage of 9/11, the first time the award had been given for graphics coverage.
He also led the paper to its first two Best in Show awards from the Malofiej International Infographics Summit for work that included coverage of the Iraq war. Blow is the author of Fire Shut Up in My Bones, released in September 2014. He graduated magna cum laude from Grambling State University in Louisiana, where he received a BA in mass communications.
The public is welcome to join by calling 305-755-6096 and purchasing a ticket for the breakfast, which is $40. The breakfast and award ceremony will run from 8:30 to 10 a.m.
MCCJ was founded in Miami in 1935 as the Miami Coalition of Christians & Jews. It creates a safe haven for dialog, trains inclusive leaders and promotes understanding for all faiths, races and cultures through education, advocacy and conflict resolution. It hosts the oldest interfaith clergy dialog in the United States and presents prejudice-reducing programs in local high schools, among other activities.
