SPOELSTRA TO HOST FREE HEAT CYCLE FOR SAFETY EVENT APRIL 5TH

Presented by the Florida Department of Transportation, Four-Mile Leisurely Ride Designed to Promote Cooperation Between Cyclists, Drivers and Pedestrians

heatOn Saturday, April 5th, HEAT Head Coach Erik Spoelstra will lead a contingent of cyclists in the HEAT Cycle for Safety event, a four-mile leisurely bicycle ride along Biscayne Boulevard in downtown Miami. The event will begin at 9:00 a.m. in Parcel B located directly behind the AmericanAirlines Arena. The HEAT Cycle for Safety Event is neither a race nor a competitive affair. It’s a recreational activity designed to promote bicycle safety and cooperation amongst cyclists, drivers and pedestrians.

“Whether driving, walking or cycling, South Florida roadways belong to us all,” said Spoelstra. “This event is a fun and relaxing way to encourage everyone to share the road and to do so in ways that are safe and smart.”

“Safety is a priority at the Florida Department of Transportation,” said Trenda McPherson, FDOT State Bicycle/Pedestrian Safety Program Manager. “We are proud to partner with the Miami HEAT in the Cycle for Safety which promotes the Alert Today Alive Tomorrow campaign. Remember to stay Alert Today Alive Tomorrow because Safety Doesn’t Happen By Accident!”

An avid cyclist, Coach Spo has made a public service announcement promoting the event and offering safety tips. The video can be viewed online at HEAT.com/cycle. Although the event is free, participants must register for tickets by logging on to HEAT.com/cycle. Registrants will receive a free HEAT Cycle for Safety gift bag while supplies last. In addition, the first 500 people to register will receive a limited edition HEAT Youth Bicycle helmet.

Parcel B will be open starting at 7:00 a.m. on April 5th and will remain open until noon. The HEAT Experience, including the HEAT Dancers, Burnie the mascot, the Xtreme Team and Banana Man, will be on hand to entertain riders both before and after the ride. Light snacks such as fruit, water and Gatorade will be available as will bike safety inspections.
