Student, teacher she nominated each to receive Disney vacation

By Jackie Mackay….
Downtown Disney Resort Area Hotels have selected Miami fifth grader Nicole De Barros Moraes of Southside Elementary School, located in the Brickell area, as one of 10 national winners of the “A+ For Teachers at Downtown Disney” awards competition, hosted in partnership with AirTran Airways and Walt Disney World to honor outstanding teachers.

Winning essays were selected based on overall content, grammar and heart.

De Barros Moraes submitted an essay nominating her reading/language arts/social studies teacher Linnette Vasquez as an “A+ Teacher” because she is a missionary teacher in Haiti where she volunteers to train educators, in addition to her work at Southside Elementary.

“She loves doing volunteer jobs to help people,” said De Barros Moraes in her winning essay. “And she makes learning fun. She deserves much more than just an A+.”

De Barros Moraes and Vasquez each are being honored with a vacation prize package consisting of:

• Four-day/three-night accommodations for four people at one of the Downtown Disney Resort Area Hotels;

• Four free Walt Disney World oneday, one-park passes;

• Four free tickets to the DisneyQuest indoor interactive theme park, and

• Complimentary breakfast for four people at the host hotel each day.

The more than 1,100 contest entrants from across the country praised their teachers for hard work, mentoring, a sense of humor, engaging lesson plans, dedication, patience, and sincere concern for their students. Their essays relate tales of educators who stand out with their unique teaching and ability to connect with students.

“Downtown Disney Resort Area Hotels are delighted to once again honor 10 students and their teachers who truly are standout educators making a difference in our schools every day,” said Laurence Richardson, chair of the organization’s marketing committee. “We’re thrilled with the entries we received in our nationwide contest, and we look forward to hosting our 10 lucky winners and their teachers in the coming months.” Downtown Disney Resort Area Hotels is a consortium of seven official Walt Disney World Resort hotels that includes Best Western, Holiday Inn, Doubletree Guest Suites, Hilton, Royal Plaza, Buena Vista Palace Hotel & Spa, and the Wyndham Lake Buena Vista.
