Karaoke Night fundraiser helps kids get winning smiles

GFWC Coral Gables Woman’s Club’s Karaoke Night on August 19 raised funds for Operation Smile. While the event made more than $500, another supplemental pledge from club member Aminta Konawicz will bring the number up to cover the cost of three surgeries.

That means three more children with clef palates will get a winning smile. Organizing the event was the Club’s International Affairs Chair Mayra Dominguez who called on member Mireya Kilmon and her husband, Steve, for the Karaoke sound system for the evening with Steven as DJ. Members, whose ages run from 21 to 93, all enjoyed an evening a laughter, pot luck food, and good times for a worthy cause.

Shake-A-Leg Miami (SALM), a community- based aquatic activities center serving able bodied individuals as well as those with physical, developmental, and economic challenges, has partnered with Professional BoatBuilder magazine, a trade publication for the boat building industry, on a new initiative, the “Ship Shape Project.” This project will fast track an upgrade for SALM’s Coconut Grove facility, including the fleet of boats in its community sailing program. Harry Horgan, CEO and Cofounder of SALM, needs volunteers, including marine industry professionals, as well as local supporters for immediate hands-on tasks including boat maintenance, safety, and basic repair.

One volunteer, Doug Kraft, has already taken on the role of manager for the facility and grounds, starting with a complete refurbishing of SALM’s boatshop area, with materials and support provided by Ken Batchelor and CMC Construction.
