Betsy Adams honored with George E. Merrick Award

Kicking off the Coral Gables Chamber’s Annual Goals Conference on June 25, The Allen Morris Company partnered with the chamber to present the George E. Merrick Award of Excellence to Betsy Adams. Adams, who spearheaded several Gables entrance projects and the Merrick statue through the Coral Gables Garden Club, was honored with four other finalists: Marian Krutulis, Jim Barker, Virginia Miller and Jeannett Slesnick.

Jackie Nespral emceed the event while Allen Morris addressed the crowd and helped present the award.

On June 26, Gables Rotarians met at La Palma Restaurant for their annual Installation Dinner. Outgoing president Abe Horowitz was awarded the Key to the City by Mayor Don Slesnick. Installing officer and club past president Owen Freed and incoming president Wiley Hicks presented Horowitz his past president’s pin Gables Rotarians have been outstanding in their outreach under direction of Rotarian of the Year Judy Pantoja with monthly visits to the VA Hospital for Veterans Bingo and a host of other hands-on programs.

Most recently, the club has helped with Operation Thank You through Rotarian Joan Reitsma who recently presented the club a $500 check for its Scholarship Fund from Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Foundation. The check was a portion of proceeds from an event that she and friends organize annually to recognize top graduating students in several elementary, middle and senior high schools.

On the cultural front, Actors’ Playhouse at the Miracle Theatre opens a funny and poignant new musical, Married Alive, to run from July 8 to Aug. 16, with the official opening night party and festivities on July 10. This show celebrates the trials and tribulations of two contemporary married couples, one newlywed and one not so newlywed. GFWC Coral Gables Woman’s Club’s Wine and Cheese Social on June 17 gave this dynamic group of women an opportunity to share their passion for the club’s free children’s dental clinic as well as the club’s many other outreach efforts that include local, national and international charitable programs. The event took place at the organization’s clubhouse in Coral Gables adjacent to which is the renown May Van Sickle Children’s Dental Clinic that provides more than $160,000 in free dental care annually to children in need.

Debi Wilborn, second vice president, emceed the program welcoming prospective new members Abby Vicencio, Marian Iglesias, Elizabeth Hutson, Sonia Cuza, Pat Bosco, Lis Lucas, Janeli Arredodo, Catherine Fleming, Amy Baena, Maylen Montoto, Inma Murga, Karin English, Patti Hendon, Hedi Ober, Ileana Guanchez and Suzanne McClure.

Members enjoying the affair included Christy Saxon-Hernandez, Debra Adam, Michele Collier, Barbara Lapsley, Robin Burr, Linda Hartwell, Mayra Dominguez, Kathy Terry, Charo Bolanos, Mireya Kilmon, Carol Nobles, Lisa Lesperance, Diana de Armas, and Carmen Suarez. A graduate of the University of Florida with a major in Spanish, Burns has an extensive background in advertising, marketing and reciprocal trade, travel , non profit consulting and management. Before joining Miami's Community Newspapers as a columnist and marketing specialist, Gloria was the Executive Director of the Jr. Orange Bowl Committee (6 yrs.) and first Executive Director of the Coral Gables Community Foundation (14 yrs.) and the Pinecrest Community Foundation (1 ½ yrs) . In addition, Gloria participates in numerous other charitable events and is a member of the Business Forum Group, Profit Inc., the Greater Miami Festival & Events Association and the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce. In other volunteer activity, Gloria helps Miami Christian School with fund-raising and PR; is an Ambassador and volunteers for events for A Safe Haven for Newborns. She is an active member of the Music Ministry at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church where she enjoys singing in the choir every weekend.
