As we remember all those who serve us every day as first responders, a fellow District 6990 Rotarian, Joe Marouf, puts his money where his mouth is and does so every year on this anniversary. Any of our first responders may go to his restaurants on 9/11 and enjoy a free buffet set up for them all day. Just recently, Joe opened a new Carolina Ale House at Bird Road and SW 67 Avenue, much closer for our South Dade police, firefighters, EMTs, and others. The free meal is also available at other locations including NW 36 Street and 87 Avenue in Doral, and yet another in Weston. If you visit these locations on 9/11, be sure to thank those men who serve and protect us all for their efforts.

Coincidentally, on September 12 the Carolina Ale House at Bird Rd. will also host an After Hours for veterans programs for the Rotary Club of Coral Gables. The Rotary Clubs of Miami Dadeland-Pinecrest and South Miami are invited to join the fun with members of the Coral Gables Woman’s Club and guests from 6-8 p.m. Admission is a $10 donation and includes one free drink and appetizers compliments of Carolina Ale House. To RSVP, contact Past Club President of the Coral Gables Club Yolanda Woodbridge at ywassociates@bellsouth.net.

It is always great to see multiple service organizations working and playing together to share ideas and broaden their outreach. As civic organizations work together on projects, we encourage them to send information to share. Most recently a bowling fun night was held at Splitsville organized by Coral Gables Woman’s Club President Debi Van Stone Moore, whom many may know from Gulliver Schools. Coral Gables Rotarians Randy Groh and Ed Morris were among the Rotarians enjoying the evening with the CGWC, a club that also supports several of Rotary’s events including their upcoming 2nd Annual Chili-Cook Off scheduled for Sunday, February 26, 2017. Save that date.

More on that in upcoming issues.

Finally, all local charities are encouraged to check out ParkFest 5K Festival scheduled for Saturday, October 1, at historic Virginia Key Park.

The event affords non-profits an opportunity to raise funds with no risk. Marly Q and PARK (Perform Acts of Random Kindness) Foundation take all the risk out of having a 5K. A non-profit just registers their name for a team and all those who sign up under their name will have half of their fee go to their charity. For more information or to register a team, visit 5kparkfest.org.

Until next time, keep making each day count.
