South Miami Rotary brings gift of knowledge to students

Over the past several months, South Miami Rotarians have visited Campbell Drive Elementary, Grace Academy-Opa Locka, and Phillis Wheatley Elementary bringing with them the gift of atlases and dictionaries. This giveaway is one of many outreach projects this dedicated group of Rotarians participate in every year to benefit others.

The Rotary Club of South Miami meets every Tuesday, 12:15 p.m., at Carrabba’s Italian Grill in South Miami. Meetings feature great speakers and visiting Rotarians are always welcomed. Most recently, Paul Hunt addressed the group on the topic of “What to Do with the Second Half of Your Life.” For today’s retirees, playing golf five days a week is not an option. More fulfilling options await and many are turning to more charitable options including volunteerism.

Speaking of great service organizations, the GFWC Coral Gables Woman’s Club (CGWC) recently featured a guest speaker with a topic of concern to all…

Hurricane Season. Now that the season has arrived. CGWC and other organizations are making sure their membership is well informed. CGWC’s June 3rd meeting featured Chris Landsea, Science & Operations Officer of NOAA/NWS/National Hurricane Center. Public Affairs Club Chair Debra Adam made it a festive occasion as well serving Hurricane cocktails and decorating the tables and handing out loads of University of Miami Hurricane souvenirs as a fun way to carry the evening’s theme. Landsea’s power point presentation certainly gave the group new insight and was followed by many questions and answers.

The CGWC next meeting on June 17 will be a Wine and Cheese reception for prospective new members. Those wishing to attend to learn more about the club and its many outreach programs should contact Debi Wilborn at 305-595-9195 or via e-mail at < debicgwc@aol.com >.

Much like CGWC, Gables Rotarians received hurricane preparedness tips and information from Marielena Villamil, Vice Chair/Chair-Elect Board of Directors of the American Red Cross of Greater Miami & the Keys. Of course, the American Red Cross is on call around the world, 24/7 for everything from natural disasters to wars. A storm readiness check off list was especially appreciated by the crowd.

On another topic, the Alliance for Aging is planning its 2009 Positive Living Awards to be held Thursday, November 19th at Jungle Island.

Organizations are invited to nominate a deserving colleague/volunteer/friend based on various categories and criteria outlined on the nomination form. The deadline is Tuesday, June 30. For more information on this or to receive an application form, call Stephanie Fojo, at Eventures Special Event Productions, 305-274-4772.

The Singing Miamians of Pinecrest held the “Novice Quartet Competition” at Evelyn Greer Park on June 9. The event was free to the crowd who cheered for their favorites as well as the Miamians chorus who also chimed in for a few songs to the delight of all. The group is always looking men with voices who are interested in joining.

For more information, call 305-274-7464 or go online to www.miamians.org .

Until next week, keep making each day count.

Keeping up with what’s happening in our community is quite a challenge and I am certain there are many activities I miss. If you would like to submit information for this column, please send your news via e-mail to < galburns@aol.com >.
