Casino Night raises funds for Healthy Smiles

The Coral Gables Woman’s Club Havana Nights Casino Night packed their clubhouse Saturday night to benefit the club’s free children’s dental clinic. Guests enjoyed cigar rolling, Cuban food, gaming and shopping as the night kicked off and even visited the clinic adjacent to one of their ballrooms in the clubhouse. As guests collected their purchases, more fun ensued as guests took to the floor for dancing into the wee hours. Kudos to these women who support a free children’s dental clinic serving the children of the working poor and providing more than $225,000 in free care annually. Among the many working the event and responsible for its success were Mayra Dominguez, Debi Van Stone Moore, Linda Hartwell, Carmen Suarez, Ruth Martinez, Enid Miguez, Dr. Iris Torres, Eneida Rivera, Robin Burr, Susie Tilson, Vicki McGroarty, Mitzi Jenner and dozens more.

The CGWC’s May Van Sickle Children’s Dental Clinic serves children of the working poor throughout Miami-Dade County. Membership is not restricted to Coral Gables and, in fact, members come from as far away as Davie, S. Miami, Pinecrest, Palmetto Bay and even Miramar to participate in this club’s outreach efforts. Women looking to serve are welcomed to attend a meeting and find out how to become involved. The club meets the first and third Wednesday night of every month at their clubhouse at 1001 East Ponce de Leon Blvd. For more information, go to

Speaking of outreach to the community, South Miami Rotarians recently invited Camillus House to address their weekly meeting. More than 50 years ago, Camillus started out as a shelter serving Cuban refugees and is now a full service center offering a “continuum of care” for persons who are poor and homeless. South Miami Rotary Club President Gabriel De Armas welcomed Maria Peralta and Andria Obermayer Hanley, of Camillus House thanking them for enlightening them on the many services Camillus House now provides.

In other non profit action, on Thursday, April 23, 2015, for the 30th year, the 2015 Mercedes-Benz Corporate Run will take over downtown Miami with staging at Bayfront Park. The event encourages participation by employees of businesses, corporations, government agencies, financial institutions and non-profits – regardless of company size – and incorporates a special competition to award the overall men’s, women’s and co-ed teams in 20 different industries.

Since the very first event in 1985, participant numbers have grown to include more than 33,000 individual racers and in excess of 1,200 South Florida companies. This evening race begins promptly at 6:45 p.m. Entry fee is $40 per participant and no registrations will be accepted after March 26, 2015.
