Current economy impacts many organizations

Americans are possibly the most generous people in the world and, in this economic climate, this is more evident than ever. Even those without jobs, give something equally valuable, their time and talent.

Many organizations, while feeling the pinch, are also sensitive to members who may not be able to give as before. Along that vein many have reduced the price of events and membership obligation so as not to lose members.

GFWC Coral Gables Woman’s Club, whose members come from all over Miami- Dade County and who support a free children’s dental clinic, have done just that. In fact, they recently held an indoor garage sale as yet another inexpensive way to raise funds for the May Van Sickle Dental Clinic, which has lost some of its major funding at a time when the need for free dental care is greater than ever.

The garage sale provided an opportunity for club members to meet some very interesting people including Morris Zuckerman, a 24 years Air Force veteran, who recently celebrated his 100th birthday. Taking a break in sales, club members called for everyone to sing happy birthday and offered him free pastries to celebrate that milestone. He also had his photo taken with several members including Mireya Kilmon, Mrs. American Image National.

Speaking of the Coral Gables Woman’s Club, the group is partnering with Young Stovall & Company and Turnberry Bank by hosting a Wine Tasting & Food Celebration to benefit The Safespace Foundation Endowment Fund on Friday, October 9, 6:30 – 9:00 p.m., at 1001 East Ponce de Leon Blvd. in Coral Gables. Tickets are $75 per person. To RSVP, call Carol Nobles at 305- 661-5227.

The Safespace Foundation is a non-profit 501(c) (3) organization committed to the advocacy and empowerment of domestic violence victims and survivors through the collaboration and support of the Miami- Dade County agencies and other entities that provide emergency shelter, transitional housing and financial assistance to these individuals.
