At a recent meeting of the Rotary Club of South Miami, Diana Phillips introduced the Club’s first “Take Stock in Children” scholarship winner D’Varius Wright.
Wright attended the Club’s weekly meeting with his mother, Renesa Collier, and little sister, Talia. Both D’Varius and his mother addressed the crowd and expressed their gratitude for this scholarship that will see him through four years of college and provide mentoring through high school.
In other news, South Miami Rotarian Ellen Book announced a free series of seminars over the summer on Saturdays, from 2 – 5 p.m., at the Pinecrest Library, to help residents deal with the effects of the current economic crisis. The next two sessions will be held June 27, with the topic of “Strategies for accessing health and other needed services on a limited budget,” with Dr Roselyn Smith, Licensed Clinical Psychologist, Concepcion Tuma, Human Resource Professional, and Carlos Franco, from Consumer Credit Counseling Service.
Following that there is another on July 11, “What’s in Your Wallet Now? Strategies for Managing Debt and Bankruptcy within the Context of Whole Life Planning” with Dr. Roselyn Smith as well as Marc Williams, Director of Affordable Housing, Home Financing Center, and Chris Buttafuoco, of the Great Florida Bank – Residential Lending Department.
Coral Gables Chamber President, Mark Trowbridge, was a facilitator for the Junior Orange Bowl Committee’s Board retreat held June 6, at the Coral Gables Branch Library. The JOBC has set a January 2, 2010, date for its parade, a first. This is the Saturday before classes resume and will afford local schools the opportunity of marching with their full contingent of band members. For amateur float builders, this post holiday date will afford more time to create. Non-profits, schools and businesses are encouraged to participate in this great team building exercise. Actors’ Playhouse at the Miracle Theatre opens a funny and poignant new musical, Married Alive, to run from July 8th – August 16th, with the official opening night party and festivities on July 10. This show celebrates the trials and tribulations of two contemporary married couples, one newlywed and one not so newlywed.
