Two South Florida Rotary Clubs join forces to raise funds for their foundationsTwo South Florida Rotary Clubs are joining forces once again to raise funds for their respective Rotary Foundation Scholarship. The Dadeland-Pinecrest and Coral Gables Rotarians will raise funds again this year at their Annual Rotary Golf Classic to be held February 6 th at the Biltmore Golf Course in Coral Gables starting at 7:30 a.m. with registration and box breakfast. Shotgun start is at 8 a.m. and awards and luncheon follow at noon. In addition to the Golf Tournament, there will also be a Golf Ball Drop after lunch. Proceeds from that will benefit The Rotary Foundation Annual Fund. Those buying the lucky balls closest to the marker on the golf course will win some great prizes donated by generous supporters.

In other Club news, the GFWC Coral Gables Woman’s Club’s board of director’s gathered for a dinner and gift exchange on December 17th.

The Club, that draws its membership base from all over South Florida, meets the first and third Wednesday of every month at their clubhouse, 1009 East Ponce de Leon Blvd., 6:30 p.m. They are always looking for woman who want to serve the community and what a great way to start the new year. The women are gearing up for their big Casino Night fundraiser to be held March 7th with proceeds directed to support the Club’s free children’s dental clinic. A week before Christmas, the Jr. Orange Bowl Tennis Tournament Kicked Off Main Draw with party at Bank United Center for players and families featuring guest speaker renowned tennis coach Nick Bollettieri and CBS Emmy Award winning journalist and news anchor Eliott Rodriguez who emceed the program. Honorary Chair for the tournament Martina Navratilova could not make that kick-off party but did attend the finals match to help present to trophies with JOBC Tennis Chair Barbara Waters. Several JOBC members were on hand for the Main Draw Kick Off and crowed the hall to attend later that same evening the Jr. Orange Bowl Holiday meeting at the Hurricane 100 Club.

Among the many seen enjoying the affair was JOBC Past President and Basketball Tournament Chair Chuck Little who was very excited to share news on his event that draws teams for around the United States for some great basketball games held in Doral. Of course, the Golf Committee were also present and looking forward to their event that attracts golfers from all over the world starting Dec. 27.

In other news, the YMCA held a lovely reception at Four Season’s announcing the merging of Great Miami and Ft. Lauderdale organizations. Performances by children were one of the highlights of the evening as were plans for their Gala celebrating 100 years, to be chaired by Robin and Susan Shelley, this Spring. Look for more on that in upcoming issues.

Finally, the King Mango Strut was the last parade and certainly the most fun parade of 2014. Honorary grand marshals were Governor Rick Scott and Governor Charlie Crist look alikes whose Fan Gate Debate theme brought lots of laughs. They hammed it up to the delight of the crowd as did the so many other groups gathered for this crazy parade entitled, “Life is just Ebola Cherries.”

In addition, Gloria participates in numerous other charitable events and is a member of the Business Forum Group, Profit Inc., the Greater Miami Festival & Events Association and the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce. In other volunteer activity, Gloria helps Miami Christian School with fund-raising and PR; is an Ambassador and volunteers for events for A Safe Haven for Newborns. She is an active member of the Music Ministry at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church where she enjoys singing in the choir every weekend.
