Author Donna Genet addresses Miami Dadeland-Pinecrest Rotary Club

On July 12, Miami Dadeland Pinecrest Rotarians were treated to a talk by Donna Genet about Father Junipero Serra: Founder of California Missions, a book that she authored ten years ago. This was well before his recent canonization as a saint by Pope Francis in September 2015.

This was the first of two great monthly programs, the second one being held on July 26, featuring former Opa Locka Mayor John Riley who addressed a timely topic of “Police Involved Shootings in Miami-Dade County.”

During their Summer Membership Drive, many more good speakers are scheduled including Anne Freedman, speaking coach and founder of Speakout, Inc. will talk about “What To Say at Networking Events,” on August 9 followed on August 23 by University of Miami Professor Tom Boswell, who will be discussing another current topic “Immigration – The Controversy.”

The Rotary Club of Miami Dadeland-Pinecrest meets for breakfast every month on the second and fourth Tuesday morning, 7:30-8:30, at the Dadeland Marriott Hotel, 9090 S. Dadeland Boulevard, to discuss community service projects and hear an interesting speaker such as those mentioned in this article. On the topic of Rotary, here is a date to save. The Rotary Club of Coral Gables will hold their 2nd Annual Chili Cook-Off on Sunday, February 26, at Fred B. Hartnett Ponce Circle Park. Non profits, schools and local businesses are all welcomed to participate. Sponsorships are also available. Last year’s inaugural event attracted 21 competitors with a great turn out, live music, and an all around fun family day. More information to come in future issues.

Finally, kudos go out to South Florida Simon malls who were honored as “StormReady®” and “Weather-Ready Nation Ambassadors™” by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) National Weather Service on July 12, at Dadeland Mall. Those properties recognized included Dadeland Mall, Miami International Mall, The Falls, Sawgrass Mills, Coral Square and Florida Keys Outlet Center. The crowd heard from Alein Cadalso, General Manager at Miami International Mall, as well as Robert Molleda, Warning Coordination Meteorologist for the Miami/South Florida Forecast Office of the National Weather Service. Among the other notables in attendance were Miguel Ascarrunz, Director of the Environmental Protection and Growth Management Department of Broward County Florida, and Curtis Sommerhoff, Director of Emergency Management, Assistant Director Miami Fire and Rescue.

Until next time, keep making each day count.
