It’s not too early to plan for Miami Book Fair International

The GFWC Coral Gables Woman’s Club members assembled ‘Arts & Craft Boxes’ to be donated to F.S. Tucker Elementary School during a recent meeting.

CGWC supports this school in many ways as many of the families of the children that attend F.S. Tucker simply cannot afford to purchase needed school supplies. The Club solicited help from members to fill the gap. Diana De Armas, CGWC’s Arts Chairman. Coordinated this effort. Among those helping fill boxes for Tucker following the meeting President Pam Schaefer, Susie Tilson, Patty Fossler, Barbara Lapsley, and Linda Hartwell.

The University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame has elected Tod Roy, president of Florida Team Golf, Inc. as its president.

Other officers include president-elect, John Routh, former mascot for the university and the Florida Marlins; vice-president, Walter DiMarko, an educational consultant, treasurer Ed Strongin, CPA with Pinchasik, Strongin, Muskat, Stein & Co.; and secretary, Gerard Loisel, executive director of Marine Biology Camp, Inc.

Miami Book Fair International, Nov. 8- 15, 2009, is the nation’s oldest and largest collection of authors in the country.

Elizabeth Alexander, Sherman Alexie, Margaret Atwood, Madison Smartt Bell, Andy Borowitz, Meg Cabot, Betsy Carter, Susie Essman, Bruce Feiler, Mary Gordon, Al Gore, Dr. Sanjay Gupta, John Hemingway, Allegra Huston, Barbara Kingsolver, Mary Karr, Dennis Lehane, Philip Lopate, Peter Mayle, Jill McCorkle, Ana Menendez, Ralph Nader, Elizabeth Nunez, Todd Oldham, Francine Prose, Jeannette Walls, are some of the over 300 authors from the U.S. and abroad who will gather at Miami Dade College’s Wolfson Campus to read from Ptheir works in English, Spanish, French, Portuguese, and Haitian Kreyol.

Speaking of books, CSD: Cecilia Dubon Slesnick Art and Illustration will be hosting Books and Books Show Opening Night for “Gables grown and Gables shown!” on Friday, September 4, 7 p.m. For more info, call 305-442-4408.

Ronald K. Teasdale, Vice President, Investment Consultant with SunTrust Investment Services, Inc. is hosting a client appreciation event on Thursday, August 27, noon, at Town Kitchen and Bar, 7301 SW 57 Court in South Miami. “A Disciplined Approach to Investing” will be the topic presented by guest speaker Doug Berman, Regional Vice President of Transamerica Investments. Future Chefs Club, at Chef Aliza’s, is moving to Tuesdays this September. This is a great experience for young people 7 years and older to develop cooking skills that will serve them for a lifetime. Classes are at 4:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. and cost $125 a month plus $25 registration fee for new students. Chef Aliza’s is located at 8441 SW 132 Street (east of US1). Reservations are required.

A graduate of the University of Florida with a major in Spanish, Burns has an extensive background in advertising, marketing and reciprocal trade, travel , non profit consulting and management. In addition, Gloria participates in numerous other charitable events and is a member of the Business Forum Group, Profit Inc., the Greater Miami Festival & Events Association and the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce. In other volunteer activity, Gloria helps Miami Christian School with fund-raising and PR; is an Ambassador and volunteers for events for A Safe Haven for Newborns. She is an active member of the Music Ministry at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church where she enjoys singing in the choir every weekend.
