This March Madness in Doral is not about basketball

March Madness in Doral was all about great events and openings. The City of Doral Parks & Recreation 5K on March 18 was one of many events enjoyed by residents and visitors alike.

From representation by Runners Co to the folks at SouthCom, the 5K was a success at Doral Meadows Park with perfect weather for this day of family fun. Everyone got medals and enjoyed getting to meet new people and neighbors. Our Lady of Guadalupe Church members were among the many this writer ran into that day. This race grows larger every year and kudos to Doral Parks & Rec for a great event.

Speaking of running into people, long time Jr. Orange Bowl member and Doral resident, Jodi Steinbauer was at the Doral 5K manning one of the many booths. Jodi is all about awareness for Parks & Police 4 Kids Inc., a non-profit that seeks to empower youth, provide mentoring, educational initiative for youth sports, after school programs, and more. With the loss of funding they once received from the PGA Championship, they are in critical need of funding and are looking for support.

Of course, the 5K was just the tip of the iceberg for activities around town beginning with St. Patrick’s Day. Folks checking out CityPlace Doral were impressed with all the stores and restaurant openings. A special group of VIPs were also invited to the Plaza adorned with a Bellagio like fountain for a memorable evening hosted by Related Group and Shoma. Hundreds of guests enjoyed a massive party with the Gypsy Kings as featured entertainment.

In other news, Jose Junco, a much sought after ballet flamenco dancer, teacher, choreographer, and soloist throughout the U.S. and Europe, will be featured at this year’s Coral Gables Woman’s Club “Fire and Ice” Gala being held April 8, 7 p.m., at their clubhouse 1001-9 East Ponce de Leon Blvd. In preparation for the event, Jose Junco visited the women at their March 15 meeting for a mini dance workshop enjoyed by all.

Jose Junco is a fabulous teacher getting the group to perform and entire dance in very little time. Flamenco is a lot harder than it looks – so, Jose’s teaching abilities are unparalleled. Over the years Jose has worked all over the world. Locally, Jose performed with the Greater Miami Opera in the role of the lead Bull Fighter, in the Opera La Traviata to great critical acclaim, as well as the lead dancer in Diefledermaus and La Gioconda. He danced with the Ballet Rosita Segovia; and in conjunction with The Greater Miami Opera Young Artist Program in Miami; at The Joyce Theatre in New York City; The Civic Theatre in Johannesburg, South Africa; and at the famous Flamenco “Tablao” Café de Chinitas in Madrid, Spain. Jose was even featured in the lead role of the Andrew Lloyd Weber Musical “Song & Dance.”

You can be assured that this Coral Gables Woman’s Club Gala will provide great entertainment throughout the night with guitarist, dancing, great food, drinks, silent auction, and more. Best of all, proceeds will benefit the club’s children’s dental clinic that provides more than $225,000 in free care annually to the children of the working poor in Miami-Dade County. The clinic gets referrals from agencies and schools, and recently took on an additional 20 patients from referrals from St. Vincent de Paul. Tickets are only $75 per person and may be purchased at www.gfwccoralgableswomansclub.org.

Congratulations to Doral Business Council member JetStream Federal Credit Union on the ribbon cutting for their new location just around the corner from the DBC offices on NW 12th St. A lovely party celebrated the event with lots of VIPs from the bank, testimonials from customers like Ricardo Trellos, of Cao Chocolates – and, of course, Doral Mayor JC Bermudez.

Until next time, keep making each day count.
