A Safe Haven for Newborns Saving newborns is an effort everyone can embrace and one that Nick Silverio, founder of A Safe Haven for Newborns, has made a personal mission. This non-profit has now saved from abuse and abandonment more than 225 babies. Celebrating that, Red Koi hosted a lovely party on March 12th in the Gables two days before their March 14 Walk. Last minute donations were flying in as the chair for this 2nd annual walk, Norris Perez, and Safe Haven’s Marti Bueso were joined by Safe Haven founder, Nick Silverio, for an evening of fun, food and introductions to new supporters. The Walk was held at Amelia Earhart Park in Hialeah. Hialeah Fire Chief Mike Enchia acted as the Grand Marshal with over 250 supporters participating in the Walk vowing to “be back” next year. While the Hialeah Fire Trucks had interactive games for the kids, a bounce house was provided by Jump4Fun, There was face painting as well as a talented magical production by Santiny. Tai Chi lessons from the Master, Reza Ray, Music and Sound by Michael Matthews and M/C Pete de la Torre also added to the festivities that also included a special appearance by the Krome Nights with their Harley Davidsons. As if that were not enough, they even had food cooked on the BBQ provided by Smith & Wollensky and Sam’s Club, refreshments and lots of water from Coca-Cola and cupcakes by Sweet Creations.

Senator Rene Garcia sponsored a Senate resolution proclaiming the month of March, 2015 “Safe Haven for Newborns” month in Florida. In addition, Miami-Dade County Commissioner Esteban Bovo was on hand and also presented a Resolution to Safe Haven Founder, Nick Silverio. Senator Garcia was committed to participating in the 2015 state legislative sessions in Tallahassee.

Rotarians from around South Florida from District 6990 Rotarians recently gathered at the 94th Aero Squadron for a fun networking event. On hand to greet the crowd was District Governor Joe Roth,as well as several presidents elect just back from training including Greg Martini, from the Gables Club, and Dar Airan, who has accepted the position of Club President for the revival of the club that meets at 94th Aero Squadron weekly where he encouraged everyone to do make-ups while they build their membership base.

Actors’ Playhouse at the Miracle Theatre opened another great new musical, First Date, on March 20 to a packed house that gave the talented cast including leads Clay Cartland (Aaron) and Erica Lustig (Casey) both of whom performed a few songs the previous week at a Gables Rotary meeting. David Arisco gathered a spectacular group of actors who received a standing ovation for their performance. This is yet another “must see” show that is combines comedy with great music and will make you want to see more than once. After the show, Ortanique treated the crowd to a fabulous dinner following the show that ran without intermission. As always, the food outstanding. This musical runs through April 12. A graduate of the University of Florida with a major in Spanish, Burns has an extensive background in advertising, marketing and reciprocal trade, travel , non profit consulting and management. Before joining Miami's Community Newspapers as a columnist and marketing specialist, Gloria was the Executive Director of the Jr. Orange Bowl Committee (6 yrs.) and first Executive Director of the Coral Gables Community Foundation (14 yrs.) and the Pinecrest Community Foundation (1 ½ yrs) . In addition, Gloria participates in numerous other charitable events and is a member of the Business Forum Group, Profit Inc., the Greater Miami Festival & Events Association and the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce. In other volunteer activity, Gloria helps Miami Christian School with fund-raising and PR; is an Ambassador and volunteers for events for A Safe Haven for Newborns. She is an active member of the Music Ministry at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church where she enjoys singing in the choir every weekend.
