More than 11 charitable organizations will benefit from the Scoops of Hope Breakfast at the Westin Colonnade on July 22. This year’s affair promises to be the best ever. The party will run from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m. with a full buffet breakfast, ice cream for dessert, door prizes, silent auction and more. Tickets are only $10 per person and, because the Westin Colonnade is underwriting the costs, 100 percent of the proceeds will benefit Give Kids the World Village and local participating charities such as the Junior Orange Bowl, MADD, Coral Gables Rotary, Coral Gables Woman’s Club, A Safe Haven for Newborns, and many more. Speaking of great events, the Coral Gables Chamber’s recent goals conference was packed with programs and events. Congratulations go out to the GFWC Coral Gables Woman’s Club who were honored with the Merrick Legacy Award at the Coral Gables Chamber’s eighth annual George E. Merrick Awards of Excellence Dinner and Auction and the second annual Merrick-In-The-Making Awards that was part of the conference on June 25.
Thad Adams, The Allen Morris Company, presented this award while Allen Morris presented the George E. Merrick Award of Excellence to Bill Kerdyk Jr. The chamber packed the beautiful Donna E. Shalala Student Center for the event. In addition to the aforementioned winners, also recognized were other great civic leaders including Richard Heisenbottle, Mitch Kaplan. Aurelia Reinhardt, former Gables Mayor Don Slesnick, Cristina Mas, Rene Ruiz and Abe Ng.
July is the month Rotary Clubs start the new club year and new officers and board of directors begin their term. Most recently, the Brickell Rotarians installed attorney Eric Gros Dubois their club’s new president while Greg Martini had his first official meeting as president of the Coral Gables club and Mike Sutta began his term with the South Miami club. Rotarians, whose motto is “Service Above Self,” are all part of District 6990, serving Southeast Florida, the Keys and Grand Bahama. On a regular basis the clubs meet to share at a social held in various parts of the district. Most recently, they met at Famous Dave’s in Doral where several of the newly installed leaders enjoyed a night of fellowship.
Finally, on a sad note, condolences go out to the friends and family of two wonderful women who served our community so well through their volunteer work with various organizations: Mary Nolan, an active member of the Bush Chapter of The Woman’s Cancer Association at UM who most recently was seen at the group’s annual Derby Day fundraiser, and Molly Adams, who was active over the years with the Coral Gables Woman’s Club. They will both be missed by all.
