University of Miami Professor Dr. Hal Wanless, Chairman of UM’s Geology Department, was one of the first, before other scientists saw the light, to warn us of the rapidity of global warming. Now in the forefront of this issue, Hal was honored by Politico Magazine on September 13, along with South Miami Mayor and FIU biological sciences professor, Dr. Phil Stoddard, at Renick Gallery across from the White House in Washington D.C. as one of the top 50 thinkers transforming politics for 2016.

Coincidentally, Mayor Stoddard recently spoke to the Miami Dadeland Pinecrest Rotary Club regarding the FPL issue and on October 11, the club will hear from a representative of Florida Power and Light who will discuss a contrasting point of view.

In other news, the Junior Orange Bowl Committee kicked off their festival season with a celebration at Bill and Julia Beckham’s Gables by the Sea home. The home provided a lovely setting for this youth festival affair. FPL’s Charles Knight,who serves as JOBC President, and JOBC’s Executive Director Jessica Cerda welcomed guests including several past presidents attending the soiree including such notables at Barbara Waters, Don and Jeannett Slesnick, Peter Tolmach, and J.R. Steinbauer. The Jr. Orange Bowl Parade is coming up soon, Sunday November 27, on Thanksgiving weekend. Save the Date!!

Another date to save is Friday, November 18, for a joint fundraiser at The Colonnade on Miracle Mile for Give Kids the World Foundation and Coral Gables Rotary’s Scholarship Fund. Come in casual western attire for this Rotary Round Up Hoedown at The Colonnade’s Rotunda Ballroom Admission is only $50 per person and includes open bar, The Colonnade’s amazing hors d’oeuvres, silent auction, raffle and entertainment. A graduate of the University of Florida with a major in Spanish, Burns has an extensive background in advertising, marketing and reciprocal trade, travel , non profit consulting and management. Before joining Miami's Community Newspapers as a columnist and marketing specialist, Gloria was the Executive Director of the Jr. Orange Bowl Committee (6 yrs.) and first Executive Director of the Coral Gables Community Foundation (14 yrs.) and the Pinecrest Community Foundation (1 ½ yrs) . Burns' volunteer activities led her to become a columnist for Community Newspapers writing Gloria’s Gab, that focuses on the non-profit activity, and a host of an online show, Gloria's Gab LIVE. Gloria serves the board of the Rotary Club of Coral Gables as Civic and Charity Chair, and is involved in the club's International Committee. She is an active Life Member of the Jr. Orange Bowl Committee and is Secretary of the Merrick Festival. She serves on the board of directors of the Coral Gables Woman' Club as Publicity Chair and also coordinates the club's monthly fundraiser for various charities with Gringo Bingo at Clutch Burger. In addition, Gloria participates in numerous other charitable events and is a member of the Business Forum Group, Profit Inc., the Greater Miami Festival & Events Association and the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce. In other volunteer activity, Gloria helps Miami Christian School with fund-raising and PR; is an Ambassador and volunteers for events for A Safe Haven for Newborns. She is an active member of the Music Ministry at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church where she enjoys singing in the choir every weekend.
