A new Honorary Australian Consulate Miami opened recently in Coral Gables, led by a familiar face in the Coral Gables community. A ribbon-cutting ceremony took place on July 29 in the AmTrust Bank Building at 2701 Ponce de Leon Blvd. to welcome the Australian Consulate in Miami and its Honorary Consul Don Slesnick, former Mayor of Coral Gables.

Several public officials were present including Coral Gables Mayor Jim Cason and Australian Ambassador Kim Beazley.

“We have 20,000 Australians on any day of the week in the United States,” Beazley said at the ceremony. “There is $450 billion invested in the United States by the Australians, an amount that’s rising by $2 billion a year,” he said.

The new office will provide consular assistance to Australians living in and visiting Florida and will enhance trade, economic, investment, educational and cultural linkages. The City of Coral Gables already is home to more than 20 foreign consulates and foreign government offices.
