The Miami-Dade Chapter of the Florida Association for Women Lawyers presented Coral Gables city attorney Craig Leen with the inaugural Julie Kay Amicus Award during the organization’s 34th annual Judicial Reception.
The recognition was presented to him for bringing attention to critical issues affecting women attorneys. Leen sponsored a rule of procedure that would require the granting of a continuance for an attorney taking parental leave, except in extraordinary circumstances. The proposal came out of his concern that female attorneys often are forced to give up cases to fellow attorneys when having a baby.
I am a former attorney who has had substantial dealings with Mr. Leen. The City is blessed to have him as our attorney. Also, as a stay-at-home dad with our newborn when I was still practicing, I very much appreciate his efforts regarding the issue reported in this article. Congrats to him, and thanks to the City for having the wisdom to hire and retain him in this capacity.
