While many exercise-conscious people spend time every day at the gym, squeezed in between work and their personal routine, a new concept offers better results with just 20 minutes a week.

Concept 10 10 recently opened its first location in South Florida in Coral Gables and offers one-on-one sessions with a personal trainer and special strength-building equipment.

The program is designed to have more effective but less frequent sessions. The program also is designed to target the lumbar muscles to strengthen them to reduce lower back pain.

Megan Barnes, one of the personal trainers at the Coral Gables location, explained the principle behind the program.

“What we do here is very unique hi-intensity training that focuses on a full body workout and strength training,” said Barnes. “With back pain that’s one of the reasons that we get a lot of members. We work with doctors and chiropractors all over the world and all of our equipment is scientifically based to adjust to our strength curve.

“What that means is, if you’re doing a bicep curl for example, you’re weaker at the start than you are at the finish, when you’re lifting and then lowering. So when it’s up here at the top it will get heavier, then when it’s at the bottom it will have less weight. This isolates the lower back, the lumbar region, in a way that nothing else can. It completely restricts your legs so you’re not using your hip flexors or anything like that. The same goes for our ab machine as well.”

Jorgen Albrechtsen, president and founder of Concept 10 10 said his program is good for general strengthening and all sports, including golf and tennis.

“The concept was created 11 years ago in Copenhagen, Denmark, where I’m originally from,” Albrechtsen said. “We moved the headquarters to Naples five years ago. People can come here from all over the world and get their training here and go back and open a franchise. We have locations all over the world.

“The reason for opening up in Miami is because that’s the gateway to South America. We have to educate the public in general because people have this idea that if one thing is good, twice is twice as good and they spend hours and hours in the gym.”

Barnes said she has been weightlifting for a year and a half, and has had more results with Concept 10 10 than with going to the gym. She also said that with back pain good results can be fairly quick.

“With our lower back machine, most of our members who come in leave with significantly reduced back pain after just a few visits, or no back pain at all,” Barnes said. “Usually we ask that members start out at age 14 because before that they may not be able to do some of the fluid motions. The upper age range is pretty much unlimited as long as the member is capable of getting from machine to machine.”

The first session is always free. Members usually come in twice a week at first, then just once a week after that.

Concept 10 10, located at 1426 Ponce De Leon Blvd., is open Mondays and Thursdays, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Tuesdays and Wednesdays, noon to 7 p.m.; Fridays, noon to 6 p.m., and Saturdays, 10 a.m.to 2 p.m. It’s closed on Sundays.
