This year the City of Coral Gables Fire Department has the honor of hosting the 29th annual Children’s Fire Safety Festival on Oct. 17-21, during National Fire Prevention Month.

The week-long festival will take place at the War Memorial Coral Gables Youth Center, 405 University Dr., daily from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The theme for this year’s Fire Prevention Week is “Don’t Wait: Check the Date! Replace Smoke Alarms Every 10 Years.”

Students in grades 1-3, who participate in the Children’s Fire Safety Festival, will have an opportunity to “learn not to burn” through five interactive learning stations. The stations are sponsored by Coral Gables Fire Department, Hialeah Fire Department, Homestead Air Reserve Base Fire Department, Key Biscayne Fire Rescue, Miami Fire Rescue, Miami Beach Fire Rescue, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, and the UM/JM Burn Center.

Each learning station will teach the youngsters lifesaving techniques and prevention strategies. Activities and topics will include: Stop, Drop & Roll; fire prevention within the home; crawl low under smoke simulation trailer; kitchen and home fire safety; electrical safety; home fire drills and escape, and the 911-simulation station.
