Coral Gables Hospital has expanded its medical services to include a Center for Weight Loss Surgery.

The new program, led by Werner Andrade, MD, offers patients a comprehensive approach to weight loss surgery. At Coral Gables Hospital, all bariatric surgery patients will go through a psychological evaluation before and after surgery, given a personal fitness plan that includes nutritional counseling and vitamin supplementation, and access to a program coordinator who is there to guide patients through every step of the process.

The hospital offers three types of bariatric surgeries: “Roux-En-Y” Gastric Bypass, Lap-Band, and Gastric Sleeve.

“We are pleased to offer patients weight loss surgery options that aim to improve their lives and decrease their risk of developing high blood pressure, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, stroke and cancer,” said Jeffery M. Welch, CEO of Coral Gables Hospital. “Dr. Andrade is an outstanding surgeon and has done a stellar job at developing the Center for Weight Loss Surgery at Coral Gables Hospital.”

Dr. Andrade is certified by the American Board of Surgery and is a member of the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. Prior to joining Coral Gables Hospital, Dr. Andrade helped direct Cobre Valley Regional Medical Center in Globe, AZ, in becoming a Bariatric Center. While on-staff as a general and bariatric surgeon at the hospital he performed general, advanced laparoscopic and endoscopic procedures including laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery and laparoscopic adjustable gastric band placement.

Dr. Andrade finished his Fellowship in Advanced Laparoscopic GI and Bariatric Surgery at Tampa General Hospital (University of South Florida) in Tampa. He completed a General Surgery Residency at Cleveland Clinic, Ohio. His General Surgery Internship was at Berkshire Medical Center (University of Massachusetts) in Pittsfield, MA. and he attended medical school at Universidad Francisco Marroquin in Guatemala City, Guatemala; where he ranked No. 1 in the 2001 graduating class. Dr. Andrade is also a member of the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES) and the American Medical Association.
