Through a partnership with West Gables Rehabilitation Hospital, Home Instead will be offering a free Alzheimer’s and Other Dementias workshop series entitled “CARE: Changing Aging through Research and Education.”
The Alzheimer’s or Other Dementias CARE: Changing Aging through Research and Education Training Program offers a personal approach to help families care for seniors with Alzheimer’s disease at home, where 60 to 70 percent live, according to the Alzheimer’s Association.
The Home Instead Senior Care network assembled the top experts in Alzheimer’s disease to develop the CARE approach. “We see a strong need in our community for quality Alzheimer’s and dementia care, which is why Home Instead experts developed this program” said Gisela De Armas, owner of Home Instead Senior Care Miami. “The training we’re offering to families is the same kind of training our professional CAREGivers receive,” says De Armas.
The program for family caregivers consists of four classes: Alzheimer’s Disease or Other Dementias Overview; Capturing Life’s Journey; Techniques to Manage Behaviors; and Activities to Encourage Engagement. Also available is a free guide called Helping Families Cope. This guide includes advice to help families keep their loved ones engaged and manage behaviors.
“The CARE program offers a wonderful hands-on approach that helps caregivers deal with the behavioral changes that too often accompany these disorders – one of the biggest stressors for caregivers,” said De Armas.
The workshops will help you: Learn about the causes of Alzheimer’s disease or other dementias, recognize the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease or other dementias, discover how Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias are diagnosed and understand more about the behaviors that can be caused by the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias.
The complimentary workshops will be held at West Gables Rehabilitation Hospital, 2525 Southwest 75th Avenue, as follows:
Monday, November 19, 2012, 5:30PM – 7:30PM

Wednesday, November 21, 2012, 5:30PM – 7:30PM
