Gables adds domestic partner benefits for city employees

The Coral Gables City Commission on Oct. 30 approved an ordinance providing for employment benefits to city employees in domestic partnerships, to the extent permitted by the various collective bargaining agreements.

As an employer, the City of Coral Gables recognizes that its employees may establish and maintain important personal, emotional, and economic relationships with persons to whom they are not married. The new ordinance provides municipal employees the ability to elect benefits, including health insurance, for his or her domestic partner or partner’s children, as well as other benefits such as sick leave and family leave.

The city already has negotiated domestic partnership benefits with the Fraternal Order of Police, Lodge 7, and now is in the process of offering domestic partnership benefits to employees with the International Association of Fire Fighters, Local 1210, and the Teamsters Local Union 769.
