The 5th annual Jazz in the Gables free concert series kicks off this Wednesday with a special performance by critically acclaimed jazz vocalist Kevin Mahogany. His characteristically deep velvet baritone voice is in demand across the world, but this Wednesday, January 14 at 12:15 p.m., Mahogany will give a rare performance on the steps of the Coral Gables Museum Plaza. The Kansas City native – who has performed at Lincoln Center – is considered one of the most gifted jazz singers of his generation.
“It’s an honor to have a musician of the caliber of Kevin Mahogany as the opening act of our Jazz in the Gables series,” said Coral Gables Mayor Jim Cason. “We are thrilled to be able to bring this popular event back for the 5th year in a row and look forward to providing residents and visitors with a wonderful way to enjoy their afternoon or lunch break.”
Every Wednesday through April 1st, a different jazz artist or ensemble will perform at lunchtime on the Museum Plaza, on Salzedo Street, just two blocks north of Miracle Mile. Concerts start at 12:15p.m. Box lunches by Lovables and dessert options by Häagen-Dazs will be for sale.
“We are pleased to support Coral Gables’ cultural events such as Jazz in the Gables. As a community-based hospital located in downtown Coral Gables, and serving local residents, it’s great to participate in an event that brings so much enjoyment to the whole community,” said Jeffrey M. Welch, CEO of Coral Gables Hospital.
Jazz in the Gables is made possible thanks to the support of the City of Coral Gables, Miami Jazz Coop, Coral Gables Museum, Business Improvement District, Chamber of Commerce and corporate sponsors Coral Gables Hospital and Zyscovich Architects.
Jazz in the Gables, which saw record-breaking crowds last year, will also hold two special Sunday concerts scheduled for February 15 and March 15 at 4 p.m. For more information or for a schedule of upcoming performances, call 305-460- 5311 or visit www.JazzintheGables.org.
