Jungle Island gives new meaning to the “lazy days of summer” with the exciting announcement of a fuzzy, button-nose female baby sloth, born July 4 at the popular South Florida attraction.
The two-toed, dark brown sloth needs a name and is the offspring of Myrtle and Herbert, who are popular animal residents at Jungle Island and make regular appearances during interactive VIP tours and animal encounters.
“We are always thrilled whenever we have new additions at Jungle Island, but we are particularly proud to introduce the newest member of our family — a two-toed baby sloth,” said Dr. Jason Chatfield, vice president of zoological operations. “She is almost a month old and can be seen tightly holding onto mom as they travel slowly about their cozy enclosure. We are very fortunate that mom is taking excellent care of her baby. Along with a daily weight chart, our team is providing supplemental feedings to ensure the baby sloth continues to progress. ”
Jungle Island invites social media fans to help choose between three made-for-movie sloth names: Flash, Sid or Velcro. To participate, simply tag a friend and post your favorite name directly underneath the baby sloth photo on Facebook at #JungleIsland. The winner will be selected at random at the conclusion of the Jungle Pass offer on Aug. 31 and will receive a free family four-pack of Jungle Passes.

On average, sloths sleep up to 15 to 20 hours per day. Sloths are grayish-brown in color and slightly resemble monkeys. However, they are directly related to the armadillo and anteater family. Known as the world’s slowest and laziest mammals, these extraordinary creatures collect algae on their fur as a result of being inactive and spend much of their lives hanging from trees in the rainforests of Central and South America.
