Miami Dade College’s The Reporter has been named the top state college student newspaper in Florida for the fifth straight year.
The Reporter staff placed in 15 out of 18 individual categories — including 12 firstplace awards — at the recent Florida College System Publications Association (FCSPA) awards banquet in Orlando. The paper has won 74 awards from the FCSPA in the past five years, including 47 firstplace honors.
In addition to placing first in general excellence, the paper won individual first place honors for In-Depth Reporting, Feature Story, Sports Writing, News Photo, Design, Arts Review, Feature Story, Illustration, Editorial Cartoon, Sports Photo, Comic Strip and Humor Column.
“I’m exceptionally proud of the staff,” said Daniela Hurtado, who served as the paper’s editor-in-chief last year, and currently is a junior at the University of Florida majoring in telecommunication news.“The Reporter is a great place to learn and grow as a journalist. I’m so happy that we came out on top for another year. It makes all the hard work and long hours worth it.”
The Reporter features 16 pages, prints on a biweekly schedule, has a circulation of 10,250 per print cycle, and is supplemented by a website with video and audio content. It is distributed at all eight MDC campuses and has newsrooms at the Kendall, North and Wolfson campuses. In recent years, The Reporter staff has interned and/or received job offers at major national papers and networks, including the Washington Post, New York Times, National Geographic, Miami Herald/El Nuevo Herald, Boston Globe, Dallas Morning News, Univision, and WSVN 7.
