Each year, University of Miami holds a celebrity fishing tournament as a kind of post-celebration and promotion of the University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame. 2017’s event was no different – participants were paired with former Hurricane sports stars for a full day of both inshore and offshore competitive fishing. South Motors, a long-time annual sponsor of the tournament, was on hand with two great catches of its own on display, the award-winning BMW 5 Series and the BMW X5 SAV.
After weigh-in, participants enjoy an awards dinner along with auctions featuring unique sports memorabilia, fishing gear, artwork and a variety of gift bundles. This year saw a host of tournament winners including Reynaldo Torres on High Tide claiming the ‘Heaviest Dolphin’ category with his 39.6-lb. catch. The Warbird Fishing Team claimed the coveted title of ‘Master of the Ocean’ with a total of 130.2 points, winning them $5,865.
The class of 2017 Inductees officially joined the UM Sports Hall of Fame during the 49th Annual UMSHoF Induction Banquet back in April, during a ceremony attended by many, including Coach Jimmy Johnson and Coach Mark Richt. Inductees include Audra Cohen for tennis; James Jackson, Darryl Williams and Jeremy Shockey for football; Steve Edwards and Coach Katie Meier for basketball; Valeria Tipian for volleyball and Dan Davies for baseball. 2016 inductee Joaquin Gonzalez was also honored at the ceremony. Ryan Braun, unable to attend, was instead inducted at the Baseball First Pitch Banquet in February.
The University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame is located at 5821 San Amaro Drive on the Coral Gables campus and honors those student athletes, coaches and administrators whose exemplary accomplishments have brought glory and acclaim to the university. It showcases photos, trophies, artifacts and other memorabilia commemorating its 300+ inductees from the last 90 years of U of M’s diverse range of sports history.
