Dancing takes up much of Coral Gables High senior Alessandria San Roman’s time. She is in Gablettes and Company, the school’s competitive dance team, which keeps members busy not only with competitions but with community service as well.

“I’ve been doing Adopt-A-Family,” San Roman said. “We adopted a family through one of the migrant camps. We bought gifts for the family. Since the children didn’t have anything we bought them gifts.”

The gifts were purchased in time for distribution during Winter Break.

“It’s a new family every year,” she said. “We gave [the gifts] half wrapped and half unwrapped so we can see them opening their gifts.”

San Roman said seeing the families opening the gifts give her an appreciation for what she has.

“I feel like I gave back,” she said, adding that she loves the fact that she is able to put a smile on a child’s face.

“In the past we’ve had little boys so we’ve given them soccer balls and toy trains,” she said. “Pretty much the smallest things made them happy.”

The dance troupe regularly holds workshops to help children express themselves through dance. Those workshops are conducted at school in the dance studio, but at times they have been so popular that they have spilled over to the drama room and the auditorium.

“We send emails and post advertisements,” she said. “Flyers are usually sent out.”

They let alumni know about the workshops and information is sent to friends.

The workshops are scheduled two to three times a year, sometimes on Saturdays and other times on teacher planning days.

“That way teachers can leave their kids while working,” San Roman said.

Outside of dancing, her extracurricular activities include being president of the National Honor Society. To be in NHS, students not only need good grades, they also need to do community service. One of her major projects is a program called Buck for a Billboard.

“We’re trying to raise money to rent a billboard to raise awareness of drunk driving,” she said. “We just need now to purchase the copyright.”

San Roman said the Buck for a Billboard program should come to fruition in about three months. The billboard’s location depends on how much is raised.

Another school club she’s involved with is Key Club, a service club sponsored by Kiwanis. Through Key Club and NHS, she has participated in Baynanza and helped with canned food drives.

As an International Baccalaureate student she has worked on the “Bridge 4 Peace” event, a walk-a-thon that raises money to help build a school in another country. The IB program has raised money for a school in the Dominican Republic.

“We’ve also gathered donations for people in Haiti,” she said.

San Roman is a member of Women of Tomorrow, an organization where successful women come to the school and help girls gain an education and learn how to be successful in life.

Her path to success includes college. She’s applied to Georgetown, Columbia, Duke, Brown, Harvard and Emory and the Emory Scholars Program.

“I hope to major in political science and go to law school. I plan to be an international lawyer and travel the world or hopefully get into politics,” she said.

San Roman also is managing editor of the yearbook and student council secretary of state. She was the sophomore class secretary.
