One of Brent Webber’s dreams has been to play basketball in college.

It won’t be long before Webber, a recent Coral Gables High graduate, makes his way to Ave Maria University in Naples on a basketball scholarship. Webber said he plans to play for the university’s golf team as well.

At Gables, Webber played basketball his freshman and sophomore years but couldn’t play his junior and senior years because the team schedules conflicted. He continued to play AAU basketball.

Webber was golf team captain all four years and honorable mention for the Miami Herald’s All Miami- Dade picks all four years.

“We made regionals this year which is the farthest Gables golf has gone in a while,” Webber said. Webber began playing golf when he was 4 or 5.

“My house, we had a long hallway,” he said. “I used to hit hockey pucks down the hallway. He (my dad) took me out to the golf course to see if I could play.”

Being an athlete is a family tradition. His father played tennis and basketball in high school while his grandfather played basketball.

Even Webber’s community service centered on sports. He worked as a volunteer coach at a K-8 center and taught kids how to play basketball during a summer camp at the Coral Gables Community Center.

“I do enjoy teaching the kids. Any knowledge I have, I think you should share,” he said. “I enjoy coaching. I do enjoy teaching, I enjoy helping anyone.”

In college, Webber plans to major in communications. He took TV production in high school and wants to continue. He’d love to become a sports reporter/commentator.

“Sports has been a big part of my life since I was little,” he said. “I’d love to do commentating on sports, or writing about sports. Probably end up doing something with golf or basketball.”
