Members of the Cutler Ridge Woman’s Club made Veterans Day special for William Kessler, a 98-year-old WWII veteran who was the honored guest at the club’s fall Bunco fundraiser.

“He braved the tables and rolled a mean dice,” said Jean Tong-Noon, a member of the group. “I am so proud of the club and these ladies who do so much for our community.”

The club, which was established in 1956, is affiliated with the Florida Federation of Women’s Clubs, General Federation of Women’s Clubs and Dade County Federation of Women’s Clubs.

Members work on many projects throughout the year, such as wrapped baskets and filled Easter eggs to distribute to the needy, collecting clothing and household goods for Chapman Partnership, holiday and “thinking of you cards” for veterans and military overseas, and baking done for various town functions, such as the recent Police Black & Blue Run.

“This year the ladies collected over 500 books for ages 3 to 11,” Tong-Noon said. “They distributed the books to Bel-Aire Elementry so that each child had one or two to read over the summer.

“The president of the club, Carol Ann Medina, in honor of her father, donated funds too and started an after-school reading club at Cutler Bay High School which the Woman’s Club continues to support,” Tong-Noon said. “A couple of checks were written for Cutler Bay High School as scholarship awards and to support their programs and donations were given to local schools in the form of supplies such as pencil sharpeners and paper.”

The club’s November project is wrapping washcloths with soap for Camillus House.

Attending the fundraiser event was Cutler Bay Mayor Peggy Bell, who also is a member of the Cutler Ridge Woman’s Club.

“I joined a few years ago because I saw the many good works of charity these incredible women do and the community support they provide,” Mayor Bell said. “I am honored to be a part of their association. They are great fun as well, holding events such as this recent Bunco luncheon. I encourage residents to join if they want to make a positive difference in the community, while meeting and making good lasting friends.”

The Cutler Ridge Woman’s Club meets every fourth Tuesday of the month at 9:30 a.m. for networking and 10 a.m. for their general meeting. The location is Cutler Ridge Park, 10100 SW 200 Street, in Cutler Bay.
