Last chance to visit science museum before it relocates

During the month of August, the Patricia and Phillip Frost Museum of Science invites South Floridians to say “goodbye” to its current location during its last month of operations and programming.

The museum, which opened in 1960 on three acres of the historic Vizcaya complex, will close the doors officially at its location at 3280 S. Miami Ave. at 10 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 30, and reopen in its new $300 million state-of-the-art facility in Museum Park in summer 2016.

In celebration of Patricia and Phillip Frost Museum of Science’s legacy and exciting future, the museum will host a variety of special events and programming to thank museum members and patrons, and increase awareness and enthusiasm for the new Frost Science.

On Sunday, Aug. 23, museum members will enjoy “Member Mornings” with an exclusive hour of entertainment and activities beginning 9 a.m. prior to the museum’s opening at 10 a.m. A light breakfast will be served and special experiences will include a behindthe- scenes tour of the Planetarium and meet-and-greets with the staff of the Batchelor Wildlife Center.

For the final weekend at its current location, on Saturday, Aug. 29, and Sunday, Aug. 30, museum admission will be free for children 12 and under with paid adult admission. Families, many of whom have visited the museum themselves as children and now visit with their own children or grandchildren, can enjoy special programming and activities, along with exhibits including “Amazon Voyages: Vicious Fishes and Other Riches,” “Hurricanes,” the “Under the Sea” photography exhibit presented by University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science, Batchelor Wildlife Center, Sea Lab and Planetarium.

On Sunday, Aug. 30, the museum will stay open late, closing at 10 p.m.

On the evening of Saturday, Aug. 29, the museum will host Science Art Cinema, with the support of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, which will explore the history and use of lasers. Located inside the Planetarium and Theatre, the event will feature films enhanced with live music, guest speakers and multimedia presentations.
