In the Heights opening at Area Stage, Aug. 5

The Area Stage Company and Theatre Conservatory, 1560 S. Dixie Hwy. in Coral Gables, will present In the Heights, opening on Aug. 5.

In the Heights — with music and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda, book by Quiara Alegría Hudes and conceived by Lin-Manuel Miranda — tells the universal story of a vibrant community in New York’s Washington Heights neighborhood.

It is a place where the coffee from the corner bodega is light and sweet, the windows are always open and the breeze carries the rhythm of three generations of music. It’s a community on the brink of change — full of hopes, dreams and pressures, where the biggest struggles can be deciding which traditions you take with you, and which ones you leave behind.

In the Heights is the winner of the 2008 Tony Awards for Best Musical, Best Score, Best Choreography and Best Orchestrations, the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Ensemble Performance and Outstanding Choreography, and the Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album.

“An exuberant, animated shrine to the importance of family ties and being faithful to where you come from,” said Ben Brantley, The New York Times.

The production features set design, lighting design, and direction by John Rodaz; costume design by Maria Rodaz; stage management by Estephanie Cardenas; assistant stage management by Jazmin Aquart; production assistant, lighting technician Kenya Anthony-Moore.

The show runs Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from Aug. 5 to Aug. 28. Showtimes are Fridays at 8 p.m., Saturdays at 8 p.m., and Sundays at 7 p.m.

Tickets are offered at $30, $25, and $15 (students). For information about the event, call 305-666-2078 or send email to frontdesk@areastagecompany.com.
