Zoo Miami’s Ron Magill says he enjoys a career that allows him to do everyday what he truly loves.

ChamberSouth’s General Membership Breakfast on Nov. 18 got a little wild, as Zoo Miami Ambassador Ron Magill stirred up the crowd with news of the long-awaited opening of the $35 million exhibit, “Florida: Mission Everglades.”

The new zoo exhibit is what he described as “The EPCOT version of the Florida Everglades right here within super easy access to everyone in Miami.”

The monthly meeting also served as ChamberSouth’s annual Non-Profit Tabletop Expo, offering an opportunity for members to learn about the mission of area not-for-profit organizations including Special Olympics Florida, Fellowship House, Miami Children’s Health Foundation, and Baptist Health South Florida’s Miami Cancer Institute.

In his keynote address, Magill also spoke of personal inspiration — the “gift” of enjoying a career that allows him to do everyday what he truly loves. He also offered a key to his survival: “Never be afraid of anything. but respect everything.”

Magill also noted that Zoo Miami hosted a special sneak preview of Florida: Mission Everglades for members on Nov. 19, adding that a grand public opening of their amazing replication of the Everglades ecosystem was set to happen Dec. 10.

Just off the main entry point to the Zoo Miami complex, the new exhibit offers dozens of exciting features including a Sawgrass Swamp, Pine Rockland, and a wading bird exhibit where the majority of the birds are conditioned to fly in and out on their own. There also is an entire collection of beautiful songbirds, turtles, snakes, black bears — and, of course, the Lostman’s River boat ride.

Also totally thrilling is Crocodile World, featuring a crocodile tube that allows visitors to climb through and get face to face with these dangerous creatures. Talk about the ‘wow’ factor!
